I have 2 computers
#1 is a P3 500 with 33gig 128ram running win98
#2 is a p1 133 with 2harddrives 8gig with win98 and a 1.7gig with RedHat 7.1 Dual Booting.

My question is I was thinking of Networking them reasons being the following:
1- share word doc
2- share general files, programs and such
3- games like DukeNukem3D (stuff thats runs on a P1 133)
4- running Linux without installing it on the P3 500
5- moving files from the P3 500 to Linux on the P1 133

I know that tasks 1 - 3 are do-able but what about tasks 4 and 5?

if I can't realy do tasks 4 and 5 I am kinda reluctant to spend the money on the networking 'stuff'.

Also given the above info is there anything that I would be able to do in terms of tasks that I may of over looked?

whats your 2cents?

my opinion is, money isn't much of a problem

2 network cards: <20 dollars (prolly 10 if you get them used from someone).

1 crossover cat5 cable: 5 bucks.

so you should just go ahead and do it.

moving files is easy, you can use samba and othe tools to mount/share drives.

i dunno about running linux on the machine it's not installed on... maybe running it over the network? or connecting to the x server running on the linux machine? i'm sure there's some possibilities there.

this might be worth reading: How to create a linux-based network of computers for peanuts (http://www.linuxworld.com/site-stories/2001/0823.xterminal.html) (5 part series). it talks about running x on a remote terminal.

You can do 4 and 5. To get Linux running without installing it, install an xserver and then have it connect to your Linux machine.

Thanks All :D
You people are some of the best :)

As far as money goes I'll be spending like oh about 50 or 60 bucks
2 10/100 PCI network cards
1 switch
2 cat5 cables + softwear (firewall programs and other programs)
it comes as a pakages which is not to bad coz around ontario I have priced all the parts in the pakage via the web / driving and to buy the stuff in the pakage is about $80 or so and thats the cheapest I have seen it... with that in mind is it still a go!

if you were in my shoes (size 10 :D ) would you go ahead?

I would... just to see if I could do it. :D

ugh, don't pay for firewall stuff.

in linux, it's included (iptables and other stuff, ask around in the security forum or search on it). in windows, you can get zonealarm or tiny firewall.

the firewall stuff is part of the package, its a CD full of stuff for networks.
general speaking how much do you think its worth just the CD?

I might try going around and pricing parts again.

what do you think of this place
http://www.wintroniccomputers.com/
Its one of the better places in terms of prices....

and I looked up the package deal again and it includes what I said b4 but its like $90 and there 'I think there is a rebate' but not sure if it still good.

I just might go out and buy the package or parts 2moreO... I'll see what happens

money is an issu coz I'm a student (networking and hardwear, Mohawk College) and I have one semester to go + one or two class to pick up so eduction first... even thro I think I would learn alot from doing something like this.

The worth of the CD all depends on the networking software thats installed on it. I'm going to need some more information on this one.

thats would be a problem but I can bet that its not going to be the best stuff on the market. at that web site I posted the cost is
Acer PCI 10/100mbps - $20 each
5 port hub $40
$80 + tax = $92.00

and I cable I still need so... hmmmm

you don't need 100mbps unless you just want really really fast connection between your computers. you aren't going to get that on the internet.

need a fast answer, please...

I figured your Linux servers were down and you had 1,000 users sitting there doing nothing.

I'm certainly very relieved that wasn't the case.

10baseT is all you really need unless you're going to have 100+ users on your network. :)
