Changing the login page from gnome to KDE

Anyone know how to do this in RH8.0 as the default is the gnome login screen and I find it useless, it is unconfigurable. Anyone can shutdown a box, etc.. Also, it is bland. I want to change it to the KDE login screen, anyone know what config file to change??

To make the switch, you have to use the Red Hat desktop switcher tool and select KDE instead of GNOME. Also, you could edit /etc/sysconfig/desktop (sorry if this isn't 100% correct, at work w/o linux :( ) and change the line DESKTOP="GNOME" to DESKTOP="KDE". Next, either reboot the pc, restart X, or change run levels from 5 to 3 then back to 5. Make sure you are root to do all of this. If this doesn't work, I will check later on when I am home.

Bland? do me a favor, go to art.gnome.org and look for gdm in the navigation bar on the left and then come back and say it's bland

you can prevent people form shutting down directly form the login screen by running gdmsetup form terminal (i know there's a gui way of getting to it but i don't remember where)

once in gdm setup, go to the security tab and take the check away from "show system menu" (or something along those lines)

But hey, Linux is all about choice ;)

unfortunately that didn't work :confused: so I an mot sure what to do now.....

One thing I did w/ RH9 to change from gdm to kdm is to edit the /etc/X11/prefdm script. There was an envrionment variable called DISPLAYMANAGER right above the if/else if statement choosing gdm, kdm or xdm. I changed the line from DISPLAYMANAGER="" to DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE". Sorry if this isn't 100% correct. I am going from memory. I will reply later on if I find out if I have made a mistake.
