Hello - I'm new here. I'm looking for information about setting up a dual boot for Linux and Win98. Can anyone point me the right direction(s).

I'm going to use Mandrake 7.2, by the way. Thanks a bunch.

I run Win98 and OpenLinux eDesktop 2.4. I installed PartitionMagic in and BootMagic in Windows. I then set aside part of my hard drive for Linux, which I then subdived into the ext2 and swap partitions. I installed Linux from Windows into the Linux partition without any problems. Now, when I boot, Bootmagic gives me the choice of Windows or Linux to boot (note: do not write LILO to the Windows Master Boot Record. Install LILO in the Linux partition). If you let the Linux install write to the MBR, it may make Windows non-bootable.

You might want to check out the NHF on OS booting at http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/osbooting/index.html

Bricksta, I am very new to this, but I did just put Mandrake 7.2 on my comp w/ win98 and win2k last nite. I just booted mandrake from the cd and chose to install the middle option (not maximum not minimum). It installed fine and gave me a grub botloader.

I seem to be missing something big. I've got all the files for Mandrake 7.2 on my hard drive. Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to get the installation program running. I used rawwrite and put the hd.img image on a floppy (like the readme tells me to do.) When I boot, though, I get an error ("installation terminated unexpectedly"), and the text is all crazy on the screen. This happens after the first screen (where you press "enter") and after it goes through it's mini boot-up sequence.

Am I missing something? Thanks.

Just an update here on my problem -

In that little mini-boot thing it goes through after I press "enter," when it gets to hda and hdb, it says "no response - resetting drive." Might this have something to do with my problem?

Some pertinent info: I've got an ASUS A7V mobo w/ VIA Apollo KT133 chipset (and an Athlon 1.1GHz Tbird) with a Promise Ultra100 IDE controller.

Thanks again.

Do you have your hd's on the promise ATA100?? It might not be picking those up. I have the exact board, mandrake 7.2, and it didn't recognize my promise controller. just my two cents............................................. ..
