gethostbyname error ???

Can anyone help me out to fix this error message ??? Ive reviewed /etc/hosts and HOSTNAME and triedto ensure that it is set appropriately .. but ...

Here's the Google search results (http://www.google.com/linux?site=search&restrict=linux&hl=en&q=gethostbyname+error&btnG=Google+Search) for gethostbyname error. Hopefully something there will help you fix the problem.

It appears to me that you are running the Sun's RPC (Remote Proceedure Call). stat.d is one of it's initializing routines. Do a locate for rpc.statd, and you will find it (likely) in /usr/sbin. It's failing on getting out (somewhere), as gethostbyname is a library function that opens a socket to another host. While I don't know why you are running that at all, I would call to your attention that this is one of the most widely attacked open sockets on the internet. Unless you have a life and death need for RPC, get rid of it.Cut it off in inetd.conf. Now, if it turns out that you know exactly what you are doing, and were aware of all this 10 years ago, excuse me.

By the way, run depmod -a to get rid of those complaints about modules.conf being newer than blah, blah.

Thanks guys for the great responses..

I was not aware that the machine was running rpc...and it is definately not needed..

The interesting thing was that the error message just atarted to happen recently.. Nothing really major changed.. installed php, mysql and apache... but thats bout it..
