screen is an essential program if you want to take advantage of the power of the command line. It is not for the faint (GUI) at heart, if you hate your shell prompt this won't interest you, but if you love your CLI (or want to) come check it out.
screen is:
It is a terminal-multiplexer which manages windows for terminals. So, you can open up to 40 shells with just one login. You can also let programms work in background, logout and push them back to foreground when ever you want.
I use it to access 19 different logins spread over 4 servers from one xterm with 2 keystokes.
