Yea, it takes about 3-5% of processes to play an mp3 using Windows Media player 9, and exactly 0% using Alsayplayer. I'm not doing any rendering on either. I'm not sure if there is some hardware thing alsa uses that Windoze doesn't, but somehow it uses to noticeable processes to decode mp3's.
It's an AC97 VIA835 chipset with ALC650 onboard sound. Which was a real ***** to make work in Linux, and the Alsa instructions didn't seem to work. Once I confirm my methods I'll post them for anyone else with this onboard sound chip.
