Impressive!

After semi-successfully using RedHat 6.2 and Mandrake 7.2 for the past year, I decided to try out something revolutionary--Debian.

Just when I thought I wouldn't see the wonders of apt-get; within 45 minutes, Debian was apt-get'ing stuff off ftp.debian.org by itself. :D

I'm still a newbie, but I did find Debian a little harder to install than expected (harder than text-based RH or Drake). For example, Madrake's DiskDrake tool can basically do the partitioning for anyone...even the clueless. On the other hand, cfdisk does an incredibly good job of almost making me pee upon writing a new partition table. Since I'm in a dual boot situation with important files on Win98, I decided to use Partition Manager 2000 (demo) for Win9x to set up the ext2fs and linux swap partitions. Debian then recognized it perfectly.

What really impressed me the most was out-of-the-box working PCMCIA for my Linksys 10/100 ethernet card. And although I have the base system loaded, I plan to apt-get XFree86 4.0.2 and KDE 2.1 very soon.

So if anyone has questions on base installing Debian 2.2r2 (Potato) on a notebook from a FAT32 drive without using any floppy disks, let me know.

Oh yeah...need to thank FyberOptyx back in this post - http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=015391
