OK, so I got tired of Mandrake, it didn't give me the control at installation that I wanted to have. And my plain 'ol RedHat 6.2 kept messing up when I'd trying to configure X during install, so...

I dusted off my Libranet CD and installed it a few times :) this weekend. I liked Libra when I first got it, but felt that it was a little over my head at that point in time, so went back to the "easier" distro. I've realized that "easy" ain't the way to go, I just have to take my knocks and learn. Can you help me with these questions?

1) The reason for the multiple installs this weekend was the boot procedure; I can't seem to get LILO to setup properly (I have WinME on hda, Deb on hdb). I know that that is because of my lack, not the distro. If one of you has a similar hdd setup, would you post your /etc/lilo.conf for me to take a look at? I've read the manual file and MINI-HOWTO's, but something is eluding me...

2) How do I drop back to command line from X? I want to install XFree86 4.0, it is recommended to do it when X isn't running. Libranet LogOff just drops you back to a graphical LogIn screen.

3) Do you have a favorite firewall, one suitable for a newbie like me to use? I have several on a MaxLin CD that I can use, just seeking opinions that I can install prior to getting online and upgrading this distro and kernel.

4)pppd daemon dies *immediately* under Gnome as soon as I click "Connect".
With kppp, I can dial in and connect very briefly to ISP before it dies.
Again, tried man pages and kppp Help, but am stuck there, the suggestions given aren't doing anything for me. Commented out "lock" and "auth" in /etc/ppp/options, didn't work either. Modem is USR Ext 56K on ttsy0, if that helps.

Any and all answers appreciated. I had to disconnect hdb and reinstall DOS MBR just to get back here. Gads, Windows sucks. I wish they'd go ahead and build that "better" OS :)

Start from the lilo start with 'linux -s' it will give you a single user 'text mode'. You can apt-get from there whatever you want.

1. I don't use LILO because I boot from a floppy. I believe there's an NHF on the subject though. And if you posted your conf file, I'd tell you if I saw anything wrong with it.

2. Well if you run startx from a console screen to get into it, you can just press ctrl alt backspace. But if it boots to X, it's a little more complicated. You have to make it so that it doesn't boot to X. The easy way is to run "apt-get remove xdm" but this isn't recommended. It could mess up some programs. The safer way is to go to the directory /etc/rc2.d and rename S99xdm to k99xdm. Then go to /etc/rc3.d and do the same. Then it won't boot to X.

3. I just use the firewall that's built in. It pleases me and unless you're using it at a business or are paranoid, I think you'd be happy with it too. It's arguably better than most Windows firewalls.

4. Mine does too so I just switched to wvdial. Hopefully it set up wvdial.conf when you installed. If that doesn't work, I have no suggestions.

To switch from X to the console try:
Ctrl_Alt-F1

Thanx all - I'll try these suggestions out today, and check back here later on to see what other good stuff I can find out :)

Sorry..........typo in my last reply.

It should be:
Ctrl-Alt-F1

That will take you from X to the console in
Libranet.

Have you tried contacting Libranet support? Check their website, they also got a new mailing list for users.

Firewall - pmfirewall. www.pointman.org (http://www.pointman.org)

OK, moved Libra to hdb, reinstalled - I'm just going to use the boot floppy option, it doesn't really take much longer to boot.

The Ctrl-Alt-F1 sequence works, but it is *ending* the X session, or just moving me to another console? The reason being that X isn't supposed to be running at all when I do the upgrade to 4.0, and if I'm at a console, isn't my X server still running in the background? I think it is, but I'll let ya'll tell me whether I'm wrong :)
Since I'm booting from floppy, I can't seem to use the "linux -s" command, I'll be doing the "/etc/rc2.d" mod...

I'm trying to be a little paranoid, so i can learn :) I installed PMFirewall on the last install, so I'll put it back in on this one, once I read a little more on configgerin it. thanx for the link, I'll check it out...

I'll try the "wvdial" too.

I joined the Librnet mailing list and newsletter last night, as a matter of fact. See ya there...

Thanks a million for all the responses!

You'll love Libranet. The support is great.
And it's an excellent product. And I'm told the 1.9.0 version will be out soon which includes the newest 3.4 kernel and Xfree 4.0.2.
Can't wait for that!
