load balancing

Hi,

I am trying to come up with a solution to improving performance on an apache server.

The problem is that the server is getting overloaded with cgi requests which is causing performance issues.

I am looking for some load balancing or proxy server solution.
Which one is better?
Are they different?

Please point me in the right direction.

My first thought would be to improve the hardware, esp. add more memory, but you haven't told us what you are running your server on. Why don't you post your server specs, then we might be able to help out more.
Most linux programs (esp apache) do a really good job at this already.
