Just like to say hi on my first post to this forum.
Recently i have just installed Mandrake 8.2 using VMware. I realise now that linux is the only choice for computers and i have always loved to try it, now i can.
Anyone any tips to try and increse the size of my learning curve. Currently i know around 5 or 6 commands, can someone please tell me where things get saved to when you install programs?
Cheers Phil

from the cmd line, press tab twice, and it will ask you if you wanna display everything, say yes, and it'll show you all the available commands to you, page by page
for more info on any command
man <command>
<command> is the command you wanna learn about
example:
man vi
HTH!

Welcome!
I'm a newbie myself, just loaded SuSE 8.1 a couple weeks ago. The only recommendation I can make is play, play, and play some more.
:D
Oh, and get a good book! There are a lot of them I've seen on Mandrake... it's worth it to pick up a decent beginners book. I bought Linux Complete by Sybex... not the greatest text I've ever read, but it's broad and covers a lot of the basics...
I've found that the more I play with the command prompt the more used to the 'nix world I become. Even tho most of what I've done so far can be accomplished in a Window.
You'll probably run into road blocks, but each time you make progress it feels like you just won the Super Bowl... or Daytona 500... or some other major sporting event of your choosing...
Good luck... see ya round the forum.
