Mandrake 9.0 desktop

Trying out mandrake9.0 installed frm disks in linux format.....seems to work ok but it wont let me create any shortcuts on my desktop. Even as root it tells me i dont have enough permissions...I couldnt find this addressed in JL after a search , nor on google either. Did mandrake just remove the icons for 9.1?? My install didnt have ANY desktop icons and wont let me create any.......what permissions do i need to change to be able to personalize my own desktop? thks
