There is an excellent program called RadioSpy that's available for Windows. The program is basically a frontend allowing you to connect to a SHOUTcast server. These SHOUTcast servers are internet radio stations free from annoying commercials, which I think is the best thing about internet radio. RadioSpy allows you to search by music genre or by artist. It then lists all the SHOUTcast servers that are playing the music genre you're interested in, or that are currently playing songs from the artist you're interested in. Pretty cool program.

Is there a similar program available for Linux?

On a different note, what firewall programs are available for Linux. I know of ipchains and iptables, but I was wondering if there were others as well?

Finally, I have both the Linux version and the Win32 version of Quake III: Arena. I'll be playing either version for a while then, it will freeze. A constant high pitched noise will come from my speakers, which is rather loud because I'm using Klipsch ProMedia 4.1 THX 400watt speaker system. When it freezes, my computer will not respond to any keystroke nor the mouse. I have to hit the power button to shut the computer off. In Windows98, this is no problem, worst case scenario I'll have lost file fragments. In Linux....I risk destroying my entire file system. Obviously, you never want to hit the power button without using the
shutdown -t3 -h now
command. However, when it freezes, you have no other choice, which is why I haven't installed the Linux version of Quake III: Arena since. What's weird is that I haven't had any problems with any other Linux game I have. Nor does my Linux system crash or freeze otherwise. But regardless of whether I use the Windows98 version of Quake III or the Linux version both freeze. Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks in advance.

In Windows98, this is no problem, worst case scenario I'll have lost file fragments. In Linux....I risk destroying my entire file system.Use a journelling filesystem in Linux and this isn't a problem. Reiser is my favorite. ext3 is red hat's officially supported one.

For your crashing while playing quake 3 problems you can try disabling agp and it could be heat related so you can trying removing the case. I mean these both as temporary measures to troubleshoot the problem. Since it happens in both os's you at least know it's hardware related. If you let us know what video card and motherboard you have someone might be able to make a better suggestion.

ipchains is a part of kernel 2.2x, iptables is a part of kernel 2.4x (ipchains is still supported though). You may want to read up on this. There are tons of different iptables rule sets availables on sourceforge.net or freshmeat.net. Iptables is very powerful, you can design a firewall to do just about anything with it.

I have no idea about internet radio, it's always been too low quality for me so I never bothered with it. Unless it's non-music.
