Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Installing Xwindows
I ave Linux RedHat 6.2 installed as a server. I did NOT choose Xwindows as a package upon install.
It seems now that I need it to configure some things. Is there any way of downloading the packages and installing Xwindows now? If so, where and how?
Thanks

hello,
you can use RPMs or tarballs, in you case RPMS are probhably easier. there are about 7 RPMS you need (including your X server).
grab xlibs, xserver, xsvga...
here is a nice ftp server

Thanks. I got Xwindows on, but all I get is a clock and a window with my root: prompt. Is this right (I have never used Xwindows before).
Some things tell me to access a control panel. How do I get to this? Or do I need KDE or Gnome?

pretty much --
But it's not the end of the road --
Now that you have the x window server running, you need to install a window manager.
http://download.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/kde/stable/2.1/distribution/tar/generic/src/
for the latest version of kde -- which is spectacular --
If you do make sure to get qt install it first
compilation instructions can be had at http://www.kde.org/install-source.html
Or just put the install cd back into the drive and choose upgrade instead of install
then you can install gnome, an older version of kde, and other window managers.
