Hi all

My 2 yr old is developing quite a mouse hand... but I'd like to get him on my Linux box and away from Windows. He has a knack for causing all kinds of problems with the desktop on XP.

I can't get his kiddie games to load using WINE. It tells me that it will corrupt the installation and that I should copy the files and then use Wine after...

I'm a newbie, so the whole concept of WINE is staggering...

Can anyone explain how to, or point me to a good link that explains how to, load a Blues Clues, Dora, or Toddler Advance game onto Linux?

Much appreciated!

Just let him play xbill. :) Or let him draw in a paint program.

No matter what distro you're using, there are lots of pre-packaged games for linux. Just go to your distros site and I'm sure you can find the games if you put some effort into it.

I know that debian has a group of packages called debian junior. That you can install if you run debian. ( at least without some work):) you might be able to convert the packages using alien but I don't know how will they would work outside of debian.

You may also want to check out these links for more games

hope that helps. I have not used wine myself yet

BTW try doing a google.com/linux search for kids games or something similar :)

Thanks all,

I'm running SuSE 8.1 and already have a ton of kids games loaded... his favorite of the Linux flavor is Potato Guy :D

But he really wants to play Dora and Blues Clues... I'd just rather have him on the 'nix box where I can control what he can and can't screw up by pounding on keys...

I tried using WINE to install them and it said to copy the files and then use WINE...

Is it really that simple to try and install something like this... or are kiddie games not usually supported by WINE?

Should I copy everything from the CD-ROM into a directory? How do I "run WINE" on the files in that dir after the fact..?

Sorry if I sound like a complete imp... but this is a whole new world to me... as of about two weeks ago

It may be worth giving WineX from http://www.transgaming.com/ a try.

Thank you both!

Great resource on Wine... TransGamer looks cool. I'll try getting used to WINE first before I download another app that I don't understand :p

I'm gonna go home and play a bit... it looks like I just need to copy the files over to my /home directory and then run the WINE install from there...

I'll keep playing

I found SuSE to be the easiest distro for installing Wine. With other distros I had to compile the source. Now I just installed it in YaST, then ran winesetup. Then you just have to type:

wine the_program_you_want_to_run.exe

Well, I'm getting closer!

Here's what I've done so far:

Copied all files from the disk to

/.wine/fake_windows/windows/desktop/dora

(It's a Dora the Explorer game...)

Then I cd to the desktop, and did

wine dora/setup.exe

I figured that would install it into my fake_windows... it stalls for a couple minutes, which the man said may happen because of the greedy nature of Wine...

Then the familiar InstalShield Wizard pops up... but that's it... it just hangs there.

I get all kinds of cryptic messages from Wine in the shell that says Error 'you need to run this...'

I've tried running those scripts, I've tried just letting it sit there... so far I haven't gotten any farther.

Now I just installed it in YaST, then ran winesetup. Then you just have to type:

wine the_program_you_want_to_run.exe

That made me smack my forehead with a big Duh!

I never even thought of installing via YaST! I'll give that a shot tonight and see if I can get it to install... I had only tried installing from CD using Wine and it didn't work.

That's when I tried just copying everything over to the /.wine directory and played there...

Of course... YaST...

I'll keep plugging away at it... will post back!

Thanks again!!!!!!!

Well, still no luck with the game... though I've managed to learn a lot of other things along the way on accident! :D

I'm thinking I'll try some other Win apps and see if I can get them running, then come back and try one of these games.

So far when I try to wine the setup.exe file I get a blank Install Shield window... but that's it. Tried wine-ing some of the other files in the dir just to test, and none of them worked either...

Got some more reading to do I think!

hello,
I've been using wine for sometime now but I think with lots of luck so far. I've however never had any luck with installing apps through it though. I remember reading on the wine head quarters web page that you should have the latest version if experiencing problems with installs not sure could have read that from this site maybe. If you have already got a win xp install on this system as well you may be in luck however just by installing it from XP first then go into linux and launch it from that directory I've had fair results with this. The problem with games for windows are that they call for specific things that linux/wine haven't arranged for as like with the help files associated with various windows programs. Also if the game is dependent on the CD drive you may run into a so called path issue.

I have XP loaded on another machine... they are networked (though right now it's only to share the cable modem... I have yet to delve into Samba)

The game is dependant on the CD, which might explain the "invalid path" error I was getting during one of my attempts...

I hadn't considered that... thanks for the info...

I think I'm about to a point where I'm just gonna get VMWear and load Win98 or 2K on the same HD.

Right now I'm just happy to be frolicking with the penguins... ;)

Thanks again!

http://www.ofset.org/projects/edusoft/edusoft.html

is geared toward students. No install. Just reboot to CD. I tried it. Pretty good. Lot of games for kids. Plenty of education programs that are unavailable in many other distros.

you will probably have more luck with winex, its designed for games and it even lets you install stuff (i managed to install warcraft 3 from cd, it even made a desktop shortcut. Didnt have much luck playing it though..). To get winex you are supposed to subscribe but i found a link to it http://digilander.libero.it/winehqitalia/download/winex3.0pre1.tar.bz2
I think its ok posting the link to it cause its a linux program, i duno though so if its not just delete the post :) .
