Hi all:

I've got a Radeon 8500 That i've had for 1.25 years. I stuck w/ windows most of the time until they finally gave us a 3d driver for linux.

Well, I was not impressed with the Windows drivers that were out for it, as my friends w/ GF3s and GF4s were running games beautifully and my suppossedly equal or more powerful card was crashing, stuttering, or plodding along thru games. Maybe 3 or 4 months ago I installed the latest catalyst drivers one day in Windows and FINALLY things ran like they should have all along. Hitman 2 worked beautifully, other games as well.

That brings me back to Linux and ATI drivers. Now, I know they're based or are actually FireGL drivers for a R250 or R300 based card, and i KNOW optimization for games gives their windows drivers an advantage, by the performance I get w/ my ATI drivers is terrible. My old PCI Voodoo 3 would run UT (1) beautifully, but in Linux, it's OK sometimes, but other times it'll slow down when turning corners, etc, like the card this texture thrasing or something. (it's not my hdd, and there's no other activity) cause it's easily reproducable.

Also, my glxgears scores are terrible. In the small default window I get about 2200 FPS. I hear other ppl w/ Nvidia GF4 cards getting 6000. The GF4 AFAIK is not that MUCH more powerful.

So, I ask you, what kind of performance are u getting.
