I'm new to linux. I wanted to install linux on an old computer I have. Its a old laptop pentium 200mhz. I only have 1 gig of memory and 32 megs of ram. I was wondering what flavor of linux people would recommend installing on that computer? Thanks.

You must mean 1 Gig hard drive. You should be able to fit Slackware in there and still run X-Window without any problems. You may not want to install KDE or GNOME though since they take up quite a bit of hard drive space, but Blackbox would do nicely.

I would suggest mandrake 7.2 or suse 7.0
both have very simple installation progs and u can customise setup
use kde as windows manager, and select minimal for installation
1 gig HDD and 32 MB of RAM and a newbie to boot?
I assume you have a CD drive in that baby and that you can boot from it?
If you're nervous about the switch over and your skills at installing a new OS; i would suggest a Mandrake w/ BlackBox as your window manager. Sure Gnome or KDE would be easier to use for a newbie but the trade-off in resources on 32MB of ram would IMHO justify the learnng curve.
If your Comfortable in your 31337 ability in computers and want to get as much as you can out of that thing go for Debian / console only.
I just set up a machine like that and i dig it.
Heck you end up doing so much stuff in config files anyway that X starts to seem superfolous.
By the way what kind of Notebook is it?

Thanks for all the help. My notebook is some cheap brand that I bought from some mom and pop store. I bought it before microtechnology came out so it still has the desktop processor in it. But the computer lasted me through most of my college days and now it just sits in my cabinet. I figured might as well try and learn how to use linux. I hear its not that much different from Unix so I think I should be able to learn it eaiser but I've never had to install linux and I've heard its tricky on old computers and laptops especially. Once again thanks for your help.
