Well I'm a linux newbie and its been only a day or two since I've shifted to Linux.I wanted to surf the net.I thought that connecting to the net would be as easy as it is in windows. But to my surprise the response was "modem not responding". :-(
I have a modem with a conexant chipset and it worked perfectly fine with windows.

Please help me out.

A quick search of these forums will find hundreds of posts and solutions to setting up a modem and connecting to the internet. Having set that, lets ask an important question:

Are you using an external or internal modem? Most internal modems have problems in Linux because they rely on software emulation for a lot of their functions and you guessed it these are only supported by windows. If you have an internal modem you are probably out of luck. Some manufacturers do supply linux drivers, but dont count on it.

I know there was an open source project to make linux drivers for some of these modems, but I am not sure about the current status of the project.

You might have to do what I did and just buy an external modem. But before you do, check the linux hardware compatability list first.

Download this script:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz

(Don't try to unzip it, it's not zipped)
Run it on linux, then come back and tell us what it says.

i also had the same problem when getting into linux. my modem was well and truly a Winmodem (God damnit). to top it all it was usb which i have been previously informed is a bit of a sticking point also. and to compund matters it has a conexant chipset and wouldn't support the acm standard so if you fit this profile give up and buy a new serial port external modem.

the internet is the sole reason i still have windows on my harddrive so i'm afraid linux has a little more to do before it's really a desktop contender

I recommend buying a REAL modem...

"but I'm poor and I can barely afford food" ;)

I understand, but let's weigh the options:
$15 For a real modem -OR- $200 MS Windows

newdawn, don't be bullied into buying a new modem, conexant now have made available linux drivers for their chipset, they have a development and distribution page at

http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/

Here you can download an executable for windows or linux that can tell you the exact chipset without you needing to open up your computer and give full instructions on installation.

It worked for my conexant winmodem, and I have only been using linux for 2 days.

Don't give up, and let us know how you get on.

If a linux driver is available for your winmodem, by all means use it. Sometimes I forget that people come here without actually trying to figure out anything on their own first... It's sad really.

oh believe me i know my modem doesn't and won't work all i tried to do is explain my circumstances and see if you fit the same situation as me if you want explicit answers then you should give explicit information like the model of your modem not just the chipset???
by the way if your modem is a diamond supramax usb then forget it cos no matter what you say i have scoured the net for many weeks now and it can't be done at the present time unless of course you all know other wise.:D
