Linux Distro's

I'm looking at different distros of Linux. Have Mandrake7.0 but I'd like to move on to something else. Haven't done much research on any, just what I've heard. Specifically looking at, but not limited to Suse, Slackware, RedHat. Which one's the best for just a desktop environment but expandable to more in time?

Just the basic os and a few necessary extras, then you add what you want.

you seem to need a highly customised linux flavor, try compiling it yourself :

[ it sounds hard , but is quite easy, unless you are good at messing thing up ]
