you need to give more info, what program are you running, are you sure the modem works, are you running as root or as a user?

not sure if u noticed but TheGimp gave you a suggestion, and since you sould like a total newbie, you should stay with corel for now (corel really, Really, REALLY does sux, but you can kinda learn linux thru it [if you really want to learn linux, learn how to use the command prompt, since the graphical part is different for everyone])

G/day Prisoner
If you are running kppp you don't need ppp at all, as the gimp says edit the file /etc/ppp/options and leave it (empty)

Red Hat 7 with Gnome running is pretty trouble free when connecting to the Net. I still have trouble with KDE though.

Check the faq's on the Corel website. Back when I was running Corel, I had the same problem when I was using a dial-up connection. There was an faq that fixed the problem.
Sorry, I can't remember the fix......

Gaccm is right you should try other linux software like red hat 7 or slackware.
It much better then corel linux. Plus corel linux i read is moving out of linux for a while.
Dont you guys agree?

Ah yes, I remember the horrible days of dial-up...
Get wvdial, it's much nicer IMO than any other ppp thing.
PS I don't care what you guys say, I liked Corel Linux, except for its ppp issues. I started with it and it did a good job of helping me learn Linux (I have since switched to Debian). I think people were too hard on Corel, I think they did a good job with their distro.

I had the same problem with Drake 7.1 ... I had to connect as root ... I guess your problem is 'just' a matter of permissions !

So try connecting as root first and see if the problems still exists.
To edit the file through the console, type vi pathname/filename
Read the NHF here on vi to learn how to use the editor.

If you try to edit a file that doesn't exist in that directory it will create an empty version of that file. Make sure you really are in the correct directory.

Did you read the NHF here on kppp?

if you find that file to be empty, make sure there isn't a typo... remember, linux is caps sensitive... press tab after the first few letters, and the rest of the filename should pop up...
for just a quick edit... pico is good to edit that line real quick.. ie: pico /etc/blahblahblah.file after you get the hang of the terminal and getting around in linux, I'm learning vi, and its seeming to be a challenge... good luck...

no, any distro should work, maybe more work, but then you learn the most from problems. if you load a distro and the installer does everything, then what have you learned?
i think prisoner is learning a lot more by sticking with what is at hand and the posts with helpful stuff ie actually answering the questions are better than the "just go try something else" answers. i don't use dial up any more so unfortunately, i don't have any thing useful to add.
sorry for the "rant" i know this isn't the rants forum

quit using kppp
go to the command line and use pppconfig to set up a connection. at the end select advanced options add a user to the dialup, insert user name
write the files and quit then just type "pon" to activate the connection and "poff" to kill it its simple effective and doesn't require any mucking around. Or you could apt-get install xisp which is also very good and incredibly easy to set up.

You could try the HOWTOs on Modems and ISP hookup
I'll post links if you can't find them

I think that everyone here is missing the point. He is obviously seeing a problem with authentication and I am guessing that his ISP is NOT Linux friendly. Most aren't!! KPPP and the rest of the Linux PPP proggies use PAP for the Authentication type but MOST ISP's use CHAP which is a Microsoft Implementation that doesn't work with Linux. So first thing you need to do is make sure your ISP even supports Linux. If they do ask them what Authentication Engine they use. Tell them you are using PAP and not getting a successful handshake.
Hope this helps ya out. :D

I think if I remember correctly (I'm very tired now) I had trouble connecting to my isp. I think the way I solved it was to telnet into my isp from windows (i don't think all let you do this though). I made a note of the prompt screens it was asking. One thing it asked was what protocol.
I think I entered tcp/ip or pap - can't be arsed rebooting into linux to find out. I entered this into my chatscript (I think) as something like 'protocol tcp/ip' and it worked after that.
Somebody please correct me as it is 04:40 here and I am about to fall off my chair with fatigue.
Off to bed now - chow

Corel is based on the Debian variant of Linux. Not a good idea for newbies because most of the help you'll find in this forum and the available books deal with RedHat. I have RedHat 7 and Mandrake 7.2. I tried Corel and Storm to see what the Debian fuss was all about. Not sure what people see in Debian, other than it's different enough to make debugging more complicated.
Also, Microsoft has told Corel to get out of the Linux OS business so you won't have support for that OS much longer.
