Hi,

I was just curious if anyone had tried the Mandrake 8 beta? What are your impressions?

I'm using it right now for the first time, I'm impressed so far because it installed without a hitch, and I never did get 7.2 to go. ipchains isn't there, or I haven't been able to use it, it says it's incompatible with this kernel. Bout all I know for now.

The 2.4.2 kernel does not use ipchains as a default. So, if that's what your firewall is based on, things are going to crap out. The 2.4.2 kernel supposedly provides backward compatibility for ipchains but I was not able to configure it (greyed out).

The 2.4.2 kernel is great for PnP (my ISA modem finally works with no fussing from me) but it's buggy on NFS and -- well -- I wish they would have left ipchains alone.

If you want a stable Mandy 8.0 clone, just install KDE 2.1 (Mandy RPMs are out), XFree86 4.0.2 and -- for experimentation -- the 2.4.2 kernel. Keep your 2.2.X kernel, though, so you can switch back for things that 2.4.2 isn't handling very well. I've done it both ways and, for now, I'll go with my clone until a stable Mandy 8.0 comes out.

Heads up on XFree86 4.0.2. The standard setup for getting a wheelie mouse to auto-start (by placing the command in Xsessions or xinitrc) does not work, so you'll have to manually invoke imwheel.

Mandrake beta's are always "very beta". I would suggest waiting until it's out of beta before you try it. Shouldn't take long.

I tried Mandrake 8 beta 1, and it sucks.
It's not useable. Bugs everywhere. (ok, it's beta) I recommend Red Hat wolverine if you want to try a newer distro.

RedHat fisher is great too, no bugs that have killed me as of yet!

I thought RH Fisher was the worst of the lot. RH Wolverine wasn't bad. But, they're all beta so unless you doing it out of curiosity (and not for a real useful envirnonment), wait for the production releases. Or, maybe go with SuSE 7.1.

I'm with idea. Let the Mandrakes cook for a while before trying them. I am so happy with Drake 7.2, I have forgotten about betas for a while.

The first beta is usually pretty bad. On 7.2 I had to manually set the permissions on most the stuff. The second and third ones weren't too bad though.
