My questions starts from here, i mount the cdrom (dvd) all i see is a folder video, and has diferent formats there, such as *.bup,*.ifo and *.vob. i really don't know what is that but i hope you can tell me, my other question is do i have do play a chapter 1 by 1, or can i see without having to play chapter 1, and the console, chapter 2? Something like this, my third and i think is the most important question, how tha hell i play dvd, i mean, i do have the mpeg2dec and this is what i do: mpeg2dec <video.vob> and the return is "stream not demultiplexed?" and at the end "segmentation fault or error"
if i try other extection he says "Using MMXEXT for IDCI transform
Using MMXEXT for motion compensation
1 frames decoded in 0.00 seconds (0.00 fps)"
and theres no image. What do you think it could be appening here, im i missing a module or a lib?
Thanks

The movie is the .vob files, The one with the most parts is the movie. It is protected, so you have to get a decoder. I recommend Xine.
Once you download it, make sure you get the Dvd plugins, the dvd menu plugin, and anyother ones you want.

okey, i will try, thanks for your help.
So when you said that the film are those files that are in *.vob, means that the movie is split in 4/5 files. How many movie chapters are in 1 file of *.vob
Once again thanks for the help

Install

xine-lib
xine-ui
xine_d4d_plugin

and also read the Xine documentation which explains exactly how to play dvd's.

I know it would be a major upgrade and don't know if its even worth suggesting but try SuSE 7.3, it comes complete with Xine as far as I know. (and has a bunch of other cool features too)

Yes i run ./configure first.
Humm do you think that Suse 7.3 could be a way? I use 6.3 because he is frendly not to windows, once i tried suse 6.4 and i didn't like it, because it was to much windows on it.Isn't the Suse 7.3 the same thing? I like Kde and gnome, but i like it in a simple way, not like windows, that everthing looks so simple, and grafical. Tell me your opinion on suse 7.3, please it's very importante to me, thanks

I use mandrake 8.1 myself and I feel it has the right mix of utils. But you can make any distro right, and your right is not always mine. So take any advice with a grain of salt.

Don't know if you are interested but you may want to give OGLE a try. Its got some verry minor glitches in it (no stop button is the biggest) but its totally GUI based and installs with RPM's. Here is the link to the site where the files for it can be downloaded, www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/. (http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/.) The five you need are:libdvdcss, libdvdread, liba52, Ogle, Ogle_gui. What types of files you get are up to you I guess just make sure they are all the same type. I went with the [v0.7.5-2 RH 7.x] files which are the regular no mus no fus rpm's. Give it a try its not to bad.

I use Mandrake 8.1. I downloaded all the RPM's from the web page, and installed them with the 'urpmi', then made a link 'ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd' , then i run the xine and click on the DVD button and play - voilla - everithing works fine - no problems, no compilations .... It works right out of the box !

But im still thinking about luisjpr posted here: know it would be a major upgrade and don't know if its even worth suggesting but try SuSE 7.3, it comes complete with Xine as far as I know.
