I have a compaq armada. I've dual booted it with SuSE/NT, and Redhat/NT. It's all NT now, 'cos I need it that way for work (it's my only NT box - got two linux boxes and a solaris server), but it worked with little trouble with SuSE 7.0, and flawlessly with Redhat 7. Both had issues in earlier versions due to the fact that my laptop came with a dvd drive.

yes, you can, but you might want to invest in something like :p Partition Magic to shrink your winders partition down (this is assuming you don't want to completely hose it and install from scratch).
I believe there's an NHF or article on dual booting, or info somewhere in the boards archive that tells it much better than I could.

It's a great way to go.
Having portable Linux makes it easy to share.
Install 98 first, then Linux.
Don't be afraid to install it multiple times
before your happy with it.
I use LILO, does the job just fine for me.
Learn, read, be aware of PCMCIA services!
It's not that it's hard, people always seem to forget.
The modem thing is the biggest hurdle.
Most laptop modems aren't compatable.
Choose wisely.
Get used to hearing, I didn't know Linux could do that.
Good Luck,
