I don't want this overwriting any part of Windows except the mbr, but I understood from elsewhere that LILO will take up a little more than the MBR on some other part of the hard drive. So, where will it go, or can I specify? The User Guide does not specify this, in a specific reference to the extra part past the mbr.

lilo shouldn't mess up Windows.

As far as I have had experience, Lilo never touches Windows. Unless someone can prove me wrong - just tell Lilo to install to the MBR when you install it. (Most installations these days take care of the problem of the user screwing something up.)

Whoa.. wait...

one thing that will mess up if your unlucky... when you try to boot all you'll get is 101010101010101, and Windows will not boot.

to fix this, boot with a win bootdisk and type fdisk /mbr.

This will clear your mbr and delete lilo from there. All you need do after that is get back into linux with a linux bootdisk and find an alternative to LILO (i suggest GRUB)
