I have been running Suse 7.0 for a while without any problems. :D
I recently downloaded and installed new software (Netscape 6.1), and now I can't login as a user (there are 2 accounts on the machine) - I can still login as root. When trying to login to one of the user acounts the screen changes from the login screen to a black screen and then back to the login screen. The other thing I have noticed is that during shutdown one of the messages notes that something to do with /var/run/atd.pid has failed. I also can't create a new user account that works.

Now this is just a guess as i have no idea about your setup, but i had a similar issue when for some reason my /home directory wasnt being properly mounted (i have /home /var, /boot and / on separate partitions).

If you are using a login manager like KDM or XDM etc, and your /home partition isnt mounted, when u log in, i should just blink a few times and then pop the login back up again. However, if you are in runlevel 3 (console login) and you login without /home mounted, it should just dump you in /. if you cd into /home and then ls, it wont show anything.

try this, at the lilo prompt (if its graphical press the esc key to get a text lilo), then type "linux 3" without the quotation marks, or whatever the name of the linux kernel you want to boot is, followed by a 3. login, and see what happens.

it might also help to post your/etc/fstab file
