I finally got my modem (a linmodem, Intel HAM with Ambient chipset) up and running after installing a third party binary driver. But now I have new difficulties. When trying to connect I get a message saying I'm using the wrong password ("Bad Password"). I know the modem works because it initializes, states the connection speed, and then says I have connection to the server. It accepts the username but not the password. BTW I'm using wvdial to connect. Seems like some sort of authentication problem? Anyone have any ideas?

MSN has lately went the way of AOL, meaning you have to have their software installed to connect. I'd pick a local ISP.

You can generaly get a decent local ISP for as low as $10 a month... and the service will probably be better than MSN ;)

Or, you could always take this oppertunity to look at the boradband offerings in your area.

No no, MSN works just fine.

You have to put the prefix "MSN/" in front of your username though.

Like this:

MSN/username

Thanks for the replies everyone. The only thing is about a 1 1/2 ago I purchased a prebuilt computer and accepted the $400 MSN rebate contingent upon using their service for three years (I no longer have that computer, all home built now). If I cancel then I have to pay back the difference (which is much more than it's worth considering the rebate was $400 and 36months of service would be $792). I'll give the password suggestion a try though.

Tried the MSN/password thing and it worked (password is accepted) however ppp still times out and then about 1 minute later the modem disconnects. Basically what happens after the username and password are transmitted it (wvdial program) says it's starting pppd (with time and date) and then right after that there's a message saying pID of # (like 1581, seems to be random everytime I try to connect). Anyone know what is happening here?

Try CHAP or PAP if you are already using CHAP to connect.

Actually I have the authentication mode set as PAP/CHAP in wvdial and it doesn't work. I've tried using Kinternet and Kppp as well changing the authentication mode from PAP, to CHAP, or console mode. The server seems to accept my password and login but wvdial stalls after starting pppd and then giving pID #. I know that I'm not connected to the server because Netscape can't open any webpages. About a minute later the modem disconnects. Should I try locating a name server and such? Or would this not really be helpful?

one thing that I could see working would be installing Wine in order to install MSN's software. I still think you have to have it to connect.
