Dual Sound?

Is it possible to have to applications playing sound at the same time, like what happens under Windows? Right now, if XMMS is playing, I can't hear IMs coming in under GAIM or alerts coming in from my system logs.

Right now, I am running this:

Vendor: Ensoniq
Model: ES1371 [AudioPCI-97]
Kernel Module: es1371
Bus Type: PCI

I'm also using the sound daemon on my machine to start up my sound system. (I was using ALSA, however, it doens't seem to want to run anymore...I'm a little confused about that.)

Any help, much appreciated.

Kde uses aRTS by default. I think that if you change the other programs to use aRts, You should get your sound back. I set xmms to use aRTs and i can run more then one and play at the same time. Hope this helps

I changed XMMS to use arts, but, still didn't help. I still can't hear GAIM sounds while I'm playing anything with XMMS.

Anybody have any other suggestions?
