I'm thinking of installing Linux in a single-boot on my home webserver, and a dual-boot with Windows on my laptop, mainly to experiment. Unfortunately, I'm pretty much reliant on a few things Windows gives me.
I use my webserver (currently Win2K Server with Apache 2) to download things that take forever, like ISOs on slow servers, and to automatically back up my file server (running Debian with Samba) every night to its own hard drive. It uses Windows' built-in backup program and task scheduler to do that. What is the best way to do that with Linux? Since it runs 24/7, I sometimes use GetRight on it to download huge files. It's downloading SuSE Linux 8.1 as I type this :). Is there a similar segmenting downloading program for Linux that can pull the same file of multiple servers automatically?
<edit>
I've since found Axel (http://www.lintux.cx/axel.html) for segmented downloading and a nice list of backup programs here (http://www.linuxvalley.it/encyclopedia/ldp/guide/lasg/backups/). Does anybody have experience with the free ones? What do you prefer?

I need my laptop to cache certain files off of my file server, so I can have my school work and MP3s when I'm off my network. Is there a way to do this with Linux? It would also be nice to have it hibernate (suspend to disk) instead of shutting down the OS completely when the computer is off. Windows currently comes back from hibernation in 10 seconds or so. Can Linux do this?
<edit>
Is rsync a good way to keep local copies of things on my file server?
</edit>
Sorry for the long-winded post. Many thanks if you can point me in the right direction.
