i have an ancient pc that i was thinking of installing linux on...i dont know the specifics of the pc as it is stored away at the moment...i know it has a floppy drive but that is it and i think it has also got windows 3.1 on it at the moment, would it be possible to install linux and if so how.

I think the best way to go is to borrow a cdrom drive, pop knoppix in there so you can get an idea of what hardware is in there.........take it from there :)

This site below is a good place to start. What is your definition of old anyway? There are distros that can be installed by floppy and run on as little as 4mb RAM. If it is a really old PC a CDROM might not work.

Linux per se can be installed on anything as long as the minimal hardware requirements are met. Linux isn't graphical. That's X. Stay away from X.
Use Linux, links for text Web browsing, pine for e-mail.
