I have tried installing two different distros, Mandrake and SuSE and both times, after install, when my computer boots for the first time, instead of going to lilo or anything, it just lists "01 01 01 01 01" over and over again untill i turn off my computer. What is wrong?

Could you give a few more details please???

Dualboot?
More than one hd?
Partition setup?
Where was Lilo installed to? mbr or Linux partition?

It is a single boot, one hard drive with just the linux native partition and a swap partition. LILO was installed to the partition not the MBR. I can get into just the command line through a bootdisk but that is about it.

i seem to have gotten it to work by putting LILO on the MBR instead of the partition

if you don't put anything on the MBR, then you may be screwed, I have never tried it, but think ..... if the HD can't find out what it needs to load from some OS loader at the beginning of it reading itself, it will spaz out bad!

Using fdisk and changing the Linux partition to active would/should have fixed your boot problem.
