actually, what i want to know is how to create a cdrom shortcut that will mount a cdrom when you click on it. in kde its as simple as right clicking on the desktop, new cdrom, etc.

in gnome you cant do that. any ideas?

Hmm, my default install of Gnome in RedHat 7.0 automatically mounts when you insert a cd. Try right clicking on the desktop, choose New -> Launcher and put 'mount /mnt/cdrom' maybe?

I haven't tried this yet though. :p

When I had an old version of gnome running, I could right click on the desktop and select ' Rescan Devices ' and icons would appear for the cdrom and floppy. Try this. If it doesn't work, you probably will have to put an entry in your /etc/fstab file for your cdrom and try it again. I believe that is where ' Rescan Devices ' looks.

There was also an applet that you could run and you would get a dialog box to fill in. Exiting the dialog box, an icon would appear on the task bar for that drive. I think the applet was called ' drive mount ' or something like that.

You're welcome. :)

When you did that, did any icons appear on the desktop?
