I'm running Debian. I installed msttcorefonts, the necessary xfs and got true type fonts to work ok. They loaded up in Mozilla and X booted up and everything appeared to be fine. But I noticed I had this annoying problem with my gnome-terminal. It didn't work anymore. Than my regular old xterm didn't work, eterm didn't work, and when I would try to use them, X would crash.
I figured for some reason the terminals weren't finding their default fonts and as a result would not run. I did some tweaking and got xterm to run, but never could figure out what was wrong with gnome-terminal. So I removed it. Purged it. Installed it again with no luck. And then I started having problems with X. It also was having problems finding fonts. When I would exit, I noticed it was complaining about such and such a font.
So I gave up, got rid of the font servers and reconfigured X, which works fine. When I would querey the font server, it would respond and list all the fonts. They appeared to load ok. My question is:
1. How do I get X to default to a particular resolution? I have editied XF86Config and removed all the lines except the resolutions I want. This hasn't helped (I know I can cycle through them...but I prefer to just have a default load). My Google searches have pretty much all eluded to editing XF86Config...so I'm looking for another avenue.
2. Any thoughts on what I did wrong with the msttcorefonts? I'd like to try it again.
Thoughts and observations appreciated.
