Installing pidentd daemon will not work alone, have you started it either from inetd or as standalone process?Try that and it should work.Hope this helps.

You should be able to start it manually like this:
/usr/sbin/pidentd &
(Assuming it's in /usr/sbin)
If you want to have it started as boot time, stick it in one of your startup scripts, or make an init script for it.

now, none of that helps. we are 'newbies'. Very few people who are asking these questions (myself included) have NO idea how to 'start it from inetd' or 'stick it in a startup script'. a little more detail please??
We're used to downloading mIRC, filing in a couple of boxes (nick, etc) and hit 'connect'. And everything works fine (until windows crashes and you have to reboot, which Im begining to believe is easier than setting up ANYTHING in linux)
