Hi all,
I'm having a lot of trouble installing a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz into my Slackware 8.1 system. Here's what I've done:

/dev/mixer permissions are OK
/dev/dsp permissions are OK
added line /sbin/modprobe cs46xx to rc.modules
PlugNPlay is turned off in BIOS
Onboard Sound is turned off in BIOS.

heres what I get from lsmod:

Module Used by
ide-scsi 1
8139too 1
mii 0 [8139too]
cs46xx 2
ac97_codec 0 [cs46xx]
soundcore 3 [cs46xx]

I really don't know how to interpret the listing from lsmod.

When I try to run XMMS I get the error:
Failed to open audio device: Device or resource busy.

Please help with ideas on this?

Thanks, Chris.

Update: I didn't mention that I am in Gnome when this happens. I have fished around and found a tip to kill ESD. When I kill ESD I get sound from xmms.

But this is a poor fix.
1) pain to kill ESD each time logged in
2) Isn't the purpose of ESD to avoid these things happening?

So... when does ESD get loaded? How can I fix it/ prevent the conflict other than eliminating the functionality of ESD?

I solved my problem, or better yet, I stopped creating probelms for myself.

The real fix is not to try circumventing Esound, but change the output on XMMS to Esound instead of OSS.

Sorry to trouble you all... Hope this helps somebody else out someday....

Chris.
