I installed Debian 2.1 Slink from CD.
Then after adding a few sites to my sources.list, from Craig, I apt-get update, then apt-get install apt, then apt-get dist-upgrade.
During the 20 or so hours the upgrade took on my slow connection, it disconnected, apparently bumped by my isp. This happened 3-4 times. On one of these times I opened another xterm and typed lynx -source http://go-gnome.com/ | sh and downloaded helix-gnome
After the dist-upgrade was complete I got an error message saying. Depends Error-Could not early remove libpam0g. After posting this error someone said to apt-get install libpam0g. I did that and the dist-upgrade completed and everything seemed fine. But it didn't install any of the helix-gnome i'd downloaded, so I did the lynx -source http://go-gnome.com/ | sh again and got an error saying sawfish-gnome needed to be installed and it was dependant on something else. I went to LinuxHelp chatroom and somebody said I should add an entry into my sources.list to debian.org as unstable in addition to the one that is stable and then apt-get update, apt-get install apt, apt-get install task-helix-gnome task-helix-core.
I did that. It downloaded in about an hour, but didn't start.
I rebooted and it brought up the Helix-Gnome log in prompt. It will let me log in but then the screen blinks black and then returns to the Helix-Gnome log in prompt.
After talking with some people at LinuxHelp this morning, I changed to runlevel 3 and then did killall gdm to get back to a text log in prompt. Then typed startx and got this message:
System: '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp -w 1 -R/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb -xkm -m us -eml
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler xkbcomp reports: "-emp ">" -eml "Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the xserver." keymap/xfree86 compiled/xfree86.xkm'
Waiting for xserver to shut down.
Anybody ever seen this. I thought it meant that I needed to redo my xf86config. So I tried that...twice and still get this error message whenever I try to startx or gdm.
Please help.
What can I do to fix this?
Thanks
