Have any of you folks tried out slackware 9.0-rc1 yet? I am itching to see what's in it, but at the moment I have too much work to do to be able to give it a try.

I'm using most of it..., well pretty much all of it except the new X11 and KDE 3.1. (no need for either of these.) The best part is for Gnome users, as the Gnome look and feel is greatly improved over previous implementations.

I don't use the Gnome environment, but I run Nautilus --no-desktop and the gnome-panel on top of Openbox.

Slack 9.0rc1 highly recommended for you.

Did. Liked the same old installer. Hated the overrated KDE as default.

Good for you... Slack's all about setting your OWN defaults.

That's the whole point, isn't it. I have used Redhat since 5.1, and stayed with it out of familiararity. But when RH introduced Bluecurve, I got annoyed with them making it ever more difficult for me to have the setup _I_ wanted. I decided to try slackware 8.1 on my son's machine, and although I haven't had much time to play around with it, I was pleasantly surprised to find configuration files located where I would expect them to be, instead of in RH's locations. I don't understand why the various distros move these things around, rename them, replace them, etc. And while GUI is supposedly about making customization more accessible, I have often found just the opposite to be true, with the various interfaces imposing their own curious and idiosyncratic tyrannies. I suspect I will soon be a complete convert to slack.
