Just a few little questions.
1) Can I save the icon position on the desktop so that if I change the font or what-not it doesnt move them all back to the top corner. And also so I can do line up without it putting them all in a vertical row but just lines them up like windows would.
2)Show desktop button that just...shows the desktop. Is there one?
3)when I lock my desktop can I have it so it just shows the desktop with what ever was on screen at the time. And can I get a screensaver that just shows the screen so I can set it to lock the computer after 10 minutes of inactivity?
4th and last, when I create shortcuts it adds arrows onto them, can I remove these?
Any help appretiated
Cheers

Hi Richard. If by any chance there is no "desktop" button on your bottom Panel ( it is usually alongside the "K" button) the right click on the panel and select ADD then SPECIAL Button and from this resulting menu select DESKTOP ACCESS. This will put a button on the Panel but to move it into the desired position on the Panel just right click on the button and select MOVE.When you click on Move the button will follow your mouse to were ever you want the button to be, to release it just left click again. All other Buttons can be moved in a similar manner.

Geez man, you're as bad as me. I doubt you'll ever find that screensaver, making a screensaver that shows the same thing all the time kind of defeats the original purpose of a screen saver.
I don't know that you can save icon locations, I never move mine around but maybe KDE is trying to promote neat and clean desktops.
On the shortcuts, is there an option to change the picture for the icon? If changing that doesn't fix it then good luck.
Maybe you should send a formal letter to KDE begging to know how to do this stuff!

If you want to change an icon it really is very easy.
First of all download some Icon collections from the excellent KDE-Look.org website. There are at least half a donzen of varied fantastic Icon sets. E.g. NOIA. The Icons will be in Tarball form but it is not necessary to use the console to install them. To install the set as a complete theme it is only necessary to open Kconsole and select LookNfeel then select Icons. At the botom of that window you will see a slot witha folder icon at the right hand end of it. click on it and use it to select your way to where you have placed the tarball. Click on your selected tarballed setof icons then click on OK. this will return you to the Icons window where you will now see the path to your tarball shown in the earlier mentioned slot so now press the "Install new theme" after which you will see your new Icon theme listed with all the others. Click on it here then click on Apply and most of your icons will be changed to the new theme.
Lets say you want to change individual Icons. Do a bit of pre planning by creating a simple directory and name it ICONS. Now go to your tarball set of icons and left click on it. This will show you a folder bearing the name of your iconset. Now right click on this folder and select COPY then go back to your empty ICONS directory and open it then right click in it and select paste. (you must keep in mind that when you left clicked on the tarball earlier you were only looking in to the tarball and not untarring or opening it so you can't do anything with what you see until you copy it out.)
Now when you click on your Icon title set you will see all the different icons.
Now to change a single icon. Right click on any icon you wish to change and select PREFERENCES which will bring up a small window on which you will see the icon again. Just left click on that icon -> in Icons Source select Other Icons -> select Browse. From here on in find your way to where you have your new ICONS directory and select the individual icon you desire to use, left click on it to highlight it then click OK then click OK again and you will see your new icon on the original Preferences window. when you in turn close that window you will see your newly chosen icon duly in place.
Keep in mind also that where ever you decide to locate the ICONS directory you must leave it there after setting up individual icons. If you move it then after you next reboot Linux will not know where to find them and so your folders will be iconless.
