I have just decided to go Slack http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif . Starting with a clean install. Got X4.2 and NV 9-6 drivers for Gforce ddr installed and working fine but cant get my desktop res. I edited XF86Config:

Section "Display"
Depth 24
modes<this is where I removed "640x480" & "800x600" and left 1024x768 and 1200x....
it kind works ok, but my desktop is wayyyy to big for my monitor. I do have the refresh rates set fine. Any Ideas???

When you move your mouse to the edges of the screen, does it slide over in that direction? If so, look through your /etc/X11/XF86Config file (or whatever yours is called) for "Virtual 1600x1200"
It may be set at something else. You can comment this out, or maybe change it to whatever resolution you run at. I think "Virtual" should be under "SubSection 'Display'" somewhere.

I'd love to know, does anyone actually use the virtual desktop "feature?" I only hear people complain about it!

No- I never use the virtual feature! I have a 17" CTX monitor, so running it at 1280x1024 gives me enough real estate to play with. Maybe people with smaller screens (14"?) use it, but even then, it wouldn't be that much of a help I don't think.

Interesting point though! Good question too- because when I first installed Mandrake it gave the option of having virtual space and I left it on, only to find that my screen was way toooo big too!! (It may have been SuSE come to think of it ). Anyway, you can just edit your xf86 file and change it or use the graphical configuration tool that comes with your distro..
