Yes, I'm curious if anyone knows why the latest stable release of the Linux kernel is 2.4.2 and the latest kernel for RedHat is 2.4.18-26.18.0?
Why are they so far behind?
I only ask because I need 2.4.2 for my sound to work; supposedly the issue with VIA AC97 audio was fixed in that kernel.
RH 8.1 is supposed to come with the 2.4.2 kernel, so why is RedHat not releasing it for RH8 systems yet? The kernel is considered stable.

A. I don't speak for Redhat.
B. I don't have a clue.
However, :D
Redhat has brought other versions upto the latest kernel: 2.4.18-26.18.0. So, I presume, sometime after 8.1 is released Redhat will make their version of 2.4.2 available for the Redhat version that are currently supported (7.x and 8.x).
BTW, I believe that the Redhat kernels are not "vanilla" kernels; but I don't know that for a fact.
Oh, lest I forget, you can go here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/redhat/rawhide/
and find the latest kernel, and other packages. Pay attention to the warnings. But then, where would the fun be if you didn't live on the edge?
Cheers--

Why is 'who' so far behind?
According to www.kernel.org , the latest stable version is 2.4.20.
Redhat 8.0 was released when the latest stable version was 2.4.18 and have of course patched their kernel many times since then.

Sorry, my bad 2.4.20 is what I meant thank you for pointing that out. I'm lazy, I skip writing those important zeros.
Last I heard 8.1, or possibly 9 if they decide to again fall to the marketing people; is supposed to come out in April.
Thanks for the help.
