ok i'm a total noob with linux. I just install Mandrake Linux 9.1 and during the installation it messed up while installing XFree86. Now here's my question. Is it possible to reinstall XFree86 in the command line and how would i go about doing it?

Thanks for you patience,
Sk8

More likely than not, you should not need to do a reinstall. But you can fix problems from the command line no problem. Go into /usr/X11R6/bin and fire up xf86config. It will run you through the configuration process again. You will be able to select your video card, mouse input device, and you will need your horizontal and vertical refresh rates for your monitor. Once you are done writing your configuration file it will write it and if configured correclty, this may very well fix your problem.

well.. i thought it might have.. but it didn't. It says failed to load module "bitmap" (module does not exist, 0) and Failed to load module "pcidata" (module does not exist,0) when i try to execute startx. maybe this might help alittle more.

You might attempt a re-install of XFree86.

Reinstall or reconfigure X?

What exactly did not work during the initial installation, the install of the Xfree86 packages or configuring X for your particular hardware?

You can either download or install off your cd.
Installation will replace and overwrite any existing.
