I am looking at buying a new video card... I am using an nvidia geforce2go on my laptop, so i have some expierence with working with them in linux. How does ati (and their linux drivers) compare? I am most concerend with OpenGL performance (my g2go craps out on any opengl app bigger than about 700 px in any direction), and possibly also dvd performance. I am looking at the Geforce 4 ti 4200 128M, is the Raedeon 9500 128M comparable?

The Radeon 9500 leaves the ti4200 in the dust.

i personally have never used an ati but i do know that drivers are and issue ati does not provide drivers very quickly and when they do lots of people have trouble with them. i would also see how well, if at all the 9500 is supported in linux.

ati are very good cards though don't get me wrong you just have be a little more careful when using them in linux.

I have the 9500 Pro and used to have a ti4200........I can honestly tell you that even running on an nForce2 motherboard the ATI dusts the nvidia.

And there IS driver support for the 9500 in Linux but to NVIDIA's credit the nvidia is "easier" to get up and running.

if you can stand the struggles to get the ATI to run it is WELL worth it with the spanking it gives to NVIDIA.

are we forgetting that UT2003 only runs on nVidia...? (or so I've heard...)

ATi makes the better card, but nVidia beats them every time with better drivers (and support)

If ATi was to ever get their software support together, they would be the "no brainer" choice.

I go for nVidia myself, I like good driver support ;)
