For the past 2 days I have been trying to get X working and so far have been unsuccessful.

With 7.1 I was given a choice of which X server I want to install. I always chose xsvga.tgz and was able to install and configure it with minimal hassel. With 8.0 the only choice I am given is to install the base X packages and then xvfb. xvfb gives me a no screen error and bombs. I run xf86config and enter the settings, I have tried every possible combination of monitor settings and video cards. X runs but its in 640x480 and I only see half the screen. I tried to find the xsvga.tgz but I can't find it anywhere on the CD.

My question is with the X 4 release, did those servers get removed and replaced with just one X server? If so, does anyone have any advice to get me up and running.

I would hate to go back to Mandrake but if I can't get X up then I will have no other choice. With Mandrake, X runs like a dream.

Thanks

Doh!
I think I may have just found my answer. It seems I may have to install the XFree 3.3.6 servers to get it working.

Now I am wondering if I can still have anti-aliased fonts? :(

I would suggest you check the support for your video card against the list for X4.1 at www.xfree86.org (http://www.xfree86.org) .

If you do decide to upgrade to 4.1, do yourself a favour and get the source code and compile yourself. Seems to work better and it's not that hard to do.
