ok...I have so many question that I don't know where to start. I've read many tutorials, help files etc... that I became the lostest person on earth.
Here is what I would like to learn therefore install (I have to play with it to learn)
I simply want to host my own webpage from home. So, I'll get a static IP once the puter will be set up.
If I understood correctly (again) I need:
- Linux ( thatis probably helpful (I have RedHat 7.1)
- mysql (or other)
- ssl (somthing)
apache
perl
What else do I need? also...since Idon't know which versions works with the others
Is there a place somewhere that I could download the whole thing and being sure that they work together?
Thanks

I almost forgot... what don't I need when I install Linux?

If Redhat has a server install, go with that. Most likely it will have everything you need. (or a developer's install).

A winmodem - you will not need a winmodem.

PHP might be nice to add to your list.

I believe the 'Server' option when installing RedHat 7.x will take over your machine completely. That is, wiping out any Windows you may have there so dualbooting is out of the question.
If you want to have a dualboot system with RedHat, go for the 'Desktop/Developer' flavour of the install. (You'll probably be set up with Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl, etc. that way too).
Cheers :)

thanks...I did the custom install and I saw www server, dhcpserver, news server....no apache or ssl :( I wish a step by step howto existed... it's not the case with linux unfortunatly. Even the newbies tutorials assume that I know what I need to install ie: dchp ??? I'd need to read a whole book on every single option BEFORE installing it because it never says what it does.

If a web server is what you want they give
Apache Toolbox (http://www.apachetoolbox.com) a try. You basically tell it what you want and it downloads the source, compiles it and installs it for you. I just ran it on my box and its pretty sweet.
Also, instead of Red Hat, go with Slackware.
