OK, i have tried a few different disto's and i seem to like mandrake the best.. but it is full of broken scripts and crap that does not work right. I also don't want to become to comfortable with Mandrake... it reminds of windows a bit. It is basically built for the end user and it is too cute. I want a powerful distro, but something that does not take much set up once installed (i still need to learn, and it would be great to learn on a system that i can use from the get go)! Also, i want a distro that will work with my Asus A7V with a promise udma chipo out of the BOX!! I am sick of booting with this: linux ide2=0x9400,0x9002,10 etc....
If you know of a distro that satisfies all of this, please let me know. Also, i would like to be able to download it, cause i am BROKE (win2k advanced server cost me a bundle, i should have used LINUX! to host my websites)

I've never had a problem with Mandrake, and in my opinion it's Linux- more so than RedHat itself and much more functional than a lot of other distros in many ways. Anyway, I'm sorry you are having problems with it/don't like it- but as you rightly know there are lots more distros out there:
You could try Debian! As a web server it will serve you well; check their HCL first about your promise UDMA though- I haven't a foggiest what the problem is there! You could also look at Slackware and Storm- both excellent, stable distributions.
For my final offer ;-) I think it would be worth taking a look at SuSE 7.0 Professional. It's not so "serious" that you lose out on ease of set-up etc., yet it's powerful enough to offer the more advanced user some really nice touches. In the end, its about finding the one that "works" for you and stopping there for a while to learn and soak in Linux.
Maybe you should sell Advanced Server and use some of the cash to buy yourself some distros ;-)

I think you can put that line in your lilo.conf file with an append command. Sorry, can't remember exactly since it's been a while since I've had to do it.
append = 'ide2=0x9400,0x9002,10' ?
If that works, you probably could use any distro you want. My suggestion is SLACKWARE - www.slackware.com. (http://www.slackware.com.)

Thanks Guys, i appreciate it :D !!! I wish i could sell my Advanced Server, but that wouold violate Micro$oft's EULA. I am downloading slackware now. I was hoping that someone would say redhat since i am used to their /etc structure already,but i am going for the best here. Also, it is free for download.. i don't think that red hat 7 is. If it is though, please give me a link to it. Thanks.

i have used RedHat v.6.0, RedHat v.6.2 and am currently using Mandrake v.7.2. Well i find Mandrake much better than Red Hat. well it is closer to "windblows". but user friendly never hurts anyone. there is not much of a difference in the "power" of these distribution. i have read that out of redhat, mandrake and suse linux... suse linux is slightly powerful... but mandrake is a all rounder winner!! i suggest you stick to mandrake...

Now that I think about it, I can't think of one distribution that's NOT free. You can get RedHat from www.redhat.com (http://www.redhat.com) or ftp.redhat.com (I'd advise against getting it from ftp.redhat.com, go for a mirror). How is RedHat's /etc structure different than other distro's? The startup system is different with Slackware, but, IMHO, it's a lot better/easier (just think of them as big autoexec.bat files... )

i suggest that you try slackware... it won't give you much of the hand-holding that red hat or mandrake does...

The power is in the shell. I haven't seen a distro without one. :confused:

I am installing RED HAT 7.0 as we speak. I installed slackware in my server, it will only be used as an apache server for some websites, and i am going to use red hat on my main machine. Thanks for everything guys. When i mentioned /etc structure, i meant where all the startup scripts and such are stored (etc/local, etc...).
