well, luckily i only installed mandrake on this box this morning.... because this evening i tried to upgrade to the 4.0.2 XFree86 so that i could run NVIDIAs new drivers and play some quake.

Well, after doing what i ASSUMED was the proper order of things and tried to restart X, i got nothing but terrible errors and re-installed from scratch.

anyone had any experience with the XFree86 upgrade from 3.3.6?

by the way, Mandrake is very misleading with their version of XFree86.. looking in the kpackage rpm manager, they have it listed as
4.0.1-28mdk
I assumed that meant that it was the 4.0.x version of the server
HAA HA.. sneaky sneaky:

X -version

XFree86 Version 3.3.6 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300)
Release Date: January 8 2000
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer
than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting
problems. (see http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)
Operating System: Linux 2.2.17-16mdksmp i686 [ELF]
