I want to get into mud games. i have 3 questions though. 1. Are there any beginners guides for mud games? I have experience in Interactive fiction and SOME experience in RPGs(not much). 2.What are some good servers to connect to? 3.Do I have to go through any rituals or requirments before hand or join a guild or anything?

MateriaMagica is a good MUD. The thing I like about it is that it has a little compass every time you enter a command so you can see where the exits are much easier than reading. I used to play it a lot. i think it was www.materiamagica.com

The first thing you'll need is a MUD client. While you can use telnet, you'll have a much better experience using a client that was specifically designed for MUDing. My suggestion is Kmud. To get it, go to www.kmud.de and click on the "download" link near the top of the page. Then, I recommend getting the binary distribution displayed on the page as kmud-1.0-linux-i386.tar.gz instead of the RPM, but that's really up to you.
After uncompressing that file, the best place to go to find MUDs to play at is http://www.mudconnect.com/. They have a very large active database of different MUD servers out there, along with a very good advanced search feature which lets you search for MUDs that have a certain number of average players on at one time, a certain code base, etc.
And lastly, the requirements of what it takes to play vary from MUD to MUD. In some, you must join a clan or a guild first, while others let you start playing right away. It all depends on the particular MUD you choose.
