I finally got hold of slack 7.1 today. I had a choice of a retail box set with a 250 page manual on running the latest slackware ($85.00 Australian) or the GPL CD ($11.00 Australian... approx $6.00 US).

Naturally I grabbed the GPL CD.

My question: Does anybody have the said book from the retail box version, and is it any good. I know there's plenty of info online etc, but I'm the sort of person that prefers a decent book sitting by to refer to when needed. If its a decent book, and I like what I find with slack, I'll be tempted to fork out for the box.

Alternativly, if anyone has it (sorry, can't give specific name etc...), can they tell me all the publishing details.

Cheers.

Go to Slackware (http://www.slackware.com) and hit the Book link. It's the very same thing that comes bundled in the box set of 7.1.

Here's a link to the book itself. Slackware Linux Essentials (http://www.wccdrom.com/titles/linux/slackbook.phtml).

Getting it to Australia could get interesting. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

Getting it to Australia would be interesting indeed. Especially since I remain steadfast in my decision not to buy anything on the net that I can't trace to somewhere in Australia as the point of origin of sale.

But thankyou, you have been most helpful. That is indeed the book.

A little searching led to this site where it is available in a condensed single download. In .zip, .tar.bz2, .rar, and .tar.gz formats.

That will have to do for now.

If you are in Sydney, visit this store in person as it is linux heaven. Otherwise you can mail or der from them - they are very reasonably priced, and they have seriously anything you want to do with linux or alternative OS's
