Strange one here. I'm trying to diagnose a problem in Gnome where when a system sound plays, it sounds like lots of static is in the background.

So I run sndconfig, and it asks me if I can hear a sample. I can here something that vaguely sounds like someone putting out an APB on a police radio. Is this right? What is the guy supposed to be saying?

Facts:
* Mandrake 7.2 (sigh)
* CD and MP3 sound is crystal clear out of XMMS.
* SBLive card w/good speakers. Running kernel 2.2.18 and it won't let me compile and patch with the latest emu10k1 patch. (which might be another problem...)

Any ideas? Thanks.

"Hello, this is Linus Torvalds and I pronounce Linux as Linux"

Is the sample.au file that Redhat uses for sndconfig.

Do you have any other electronic devices nearby, e.g., radio, CD player. I had some distortion in my computer sound when I was listening to the radio last weekend, which radio is about three feet away from my box.

I've never had any interference from the radio that sits right next to my box but I do get interference when I use my cell phone within 2-3 feet of the computer.. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks for the notes everyone. I can now safely conclude that I have no idea what is going on. I was really hoping you guys would say that the sample was a policeman talking on a CB in a helicopter.

According to windows, my sblive has a non-standard IRQ (12). sndconfig, though, doesn't let me set the values -- it just jumps right to the testing phase, and then like an idiot, starts the process over when i report i didn't hear the sample. I noticed that if i select another soundcard, it does let me select the values.

Does anyone know what command sndconfig uses to play the file sample.au? Is it esdplay?

Thanks again,
Pyro

# play /usr/local/share/sndconfig/sample.au

There is also a sample.mdi or .midi or .mid there also to test midi stuff.

And, the sound sample is somewhat unclear anyway...
