I'm looking for opinions from the pros on a Q? I have for them, but overall I'm open to hear what everyone has to say.
Which is better, me purchasing a Cisco router for home or build some sort of a fancy Linux box? Money is never a factor for me, I need all the speed I can get so I don't want to slow things down.
There's several machines here networked on a little Mickey Mouse SMC 4 port switch right now, but I need more ports to add my different laptops to aside from my machines. That's why I'm finally getting serious about inquiring about this.
Thanks in advance

Hummm...
Have you considered to atach a hub in one of the four ports?
I'm a CCNA and I could say that is not easy to configure a cisco router an it's the most expensive router-branch.... but if you have money and time to learn to proper-configure, it's the better choice.
¿no money problems?
can i borrow some? :D
Well,
1. What are you connected to on the outside? (ex. Dialup, DSL, Cable, T1)
2. How many connected systems are you going to use?
3. Are the connections in one place or all over the building?
4. What security do you have right now?
Now with out seeing the above information, i would set it up like this. (example with 4 computers 3 systems and 1 laptop and a (Wired - 16 port switch linksys EZXS16W)(wireless -access point linksys WAP51AB)
computer "A" is going to be a gateway to connect to your DSL connection. This is set up to filter all traffic and protect your inside world (network). Set this system up with 2 network cards. One points in, one points out to DSL.
hook up the hub to computer "A" then set that up to do DHCP so you dont have to worry about IP addresses inside the building.
then hook up your " B" and "C" computers ( laptop and pc's with DHCP enabled so that they get an IP addy.) to the cat 5 or cables and you have your set up. now to do Wireless you change the Switches and get some wirless cards That wireless access point can handle up to 64 users.
that is generic as i can get. but i assume others will have other ideas.

How many networks are you going to support inside your house? (ie, so you think yo need a router...) I think you shoud look at getting a nice FW appliance since you don't want to too visable to the world.
With something like a SOHO sonicwall, you could easily nat inside, provide ppoe/dhcp support (for your upstream connection) and then run some well protected services from within your house. Add in for fun, some dynamic IP DNS service and away you go.
Have fun
