Is a hub necessary?
Currently i have the two ethernet cards joined thu some cat-5, sorta,

comp1 eth0]------[eth0 comp2 eth1]---- Internet

Is this alright? I set up routing on the two computers with

route add 192.0.0.1 (comp1)
route add 192.0.0.2 (comp2)

but a ping wont reach either of them.

Is anything blatantly wrong?

if you have them directly connected, you must use a crossover cable.. If you dont, it wont work..

Yah, you need a crossover cable or a hub/switch. A small 5 port hub is pretty cheap, and is handy to have for the occasional lan party.

Actually I got a little linksys 5-port hub you can have. I'll just send it COD and you can pay for the shipping. If you want it, it works.

I would stick with the crossover cable for now. But obviously if you want 3 or more networked you will need a hub. I think the last one I got cost me £15 for a 4 port.
