I just put slack 8.1 on my computer at home and, as the title says, I have an Nvidia GeForce4. I ran xf86config, went through it fine with the correct specs for the monitor, card, etc. When I ran startx, I got "no devices found"
So, I went to nvidia, and got the correct kernel & drivers according to their script. I got the tarballs, installed them (no errors) and tried to startx again. I got the same error. I re-ran xf86config with more conservative settings, and still got the same error, "no devices found".
Any further suggestions?

edit your /etc/modules.conf. add :
alias char-major-195 NVdriver
or if you are using build 4191 then:
alias char-major-195 nvidia
PS: download and print the documentation available on the nividia website at the bottom of the download page - it has an excellent troubleshooting section.
if adding the alias doesn't work then post /var/log/XFree86.0.log

I took a look at the file, and the installation of the drivers must've taken care of that for me. The line is already there. I'll take a look at the docs on the nvidia site, though. Thanks for the help.

Sorry...forgot the log. My apologies for the format, but the only way I could get it is via an ssh log....(no samba yet)

Now for the truly weird....
I just put on VNC server, and it boots with no difficulty. I can even connect to VNC from another machine! So X does work...IIRC, VNC doesn't run without X....
So what's going on now???

Yes! I got it to work.
As usual, it was a simple change, just two lines in the xwin config file. Now if I can just get my &^%#@!!! soundcard to work...
Thanks for the help....
